Test Analyst Profile

Maryam’s career as a Software Test Analyst

"Before joining FDM, I studied a BSc in Applied Computing and graduated in July 2010 from the Manchester Metropolitan University. Initially I was unsure of what I was going to do after graduating, as I was contemplating getting my masters or travelling, but then it dawned on me that I needed to get some experience if I was going to break into the IT industry. FDM provided me with a chance to gain relevant experience in order to increase my career prospects and so it was an opportunity not to be missed.

I really enjoyed studying at the Manchester Academy, it was very central which was great and the Trainers were very helpful and not condescending in any way. It was a really fun place to train as I made a lot of friends and also socialised outside work. They were accommodating throughout my training period and the other trainees were easy to relate to and it was therefore a pleasure studying at the FDM Academy.

Despite not having much knowledge about Testing when I started training with FDM, the programme trained me in all the fundamentals of this area, including the objectives and methods of testing, which provided me with the tools to perform my roles to the best of my abilities. FDM has given me the opportunity to work on client sites, which has really opened my eyes to what the /Maryam-Solebo.jpg?v=1business world is like as every company has certain goals but has different processes to achieving them. During my time with FDM I have become more of a team player and have learnt to take more initiative and to be diplomatic in situations when needed, which are all important traits to possess in business.

After training with the Academy I was initially placed at Premier Farnell in Leeds for a period of six months and I am currently placed with ASDA, also in Leeds, working actively with the test team. The team is rapidly growing and we work closely with other individuals within the company to complete projects. I am currently working on a Work Force Management (FAST Tasks) project allowing tasks to be delegated more efficiently. I have found it to be challenging at times when deadlines are to be met, but it has also been of great satisfaction when completed.

Other prospective students will know how hard it is to break into any market or to get a worthwhile job, especially with the way the economy is at the moment. I believe others interested in a career in IT would find it beneficial to train with FDM as this gives them a better chance of getting into the IT industry by gaining the two years onsite work experience that most companies demand. FDM helps you gain the training and certification you need while also increasing your business knowledge in general. You get the chance to work with some prestigious clients that you are unlikely to get a job with if you were to do it alone, and there’s also the opportunity to work abroad."
