Core Programme

Essential parts of the course: SQL, Soft Skills and ITIL

“FDM can help you pursue a career in IT, whether you have an IT background or not. I'm now ready to work for FDM on assignment with one of their clients and have enjoyed working on a real commercial project during the Oracle module.”

Tom Stuart - FDM Mountie

The core training programme for the FDM Academy consists of:

  • Oracle SQL
  • Soft Skills
  • Introduction to ITIL

Oracle SQL

A practical grounding in Oracle SQL is essential for a career in IT, even though it is not always covered in-depth on university IT courses. Our SQL course, which you complete at home before joining the Academy, quickly brings you up to speed with the essentials.

From novice to expert in four weeks

Our course will guide someone with limited technical experience to an advanced skill level in Oracle SQL, and give you transferable skills that apply to other database platforms such as SQL Server. The first half of the course deals with essential database concepts and the particulars of the Oracle system. The second half concentrates on SQL syntax. You will learn how to combine a range of techniques and functions to perform complex queries, and have sufficient theoretical understanding to know how databases are structured and implemented.

A final phase covers PL, Oracle's programming language. As well as broadening your Oracle skillset, this part of the course provides you with the basics of programming, thus preparing the ground for other technologies such as Java and .NET.

Once completed, you will be eligible for progression into the FDM Academy where you will receive supervised tuition on a variety of technologies to industry-recognised standards.

Soft Skills training

Before moving to their specialist programme, all trainees will complete the Soft Skills Training module, building on and strengthening their interpersonal and communication skills. This will cover:

  • Interview techniques
  • Presentation skills
  • Communication skills
  • Conflict resolution
  • Improving personal success
  • Time management
  • Confidence
  • Assertiveness at work
  • Effective project management

ITIL Introduction

Another aspect of the Core Programme is an introduction to ITIL which all students will study before moving onto the their specialist stream.  The Information Technology Infrastructure Library (ITIL) is a set of concepts and techniques for managing IT infrastructure, development and operations.

ITIL provides a detailed description of a number of important IT practices with comprehensive checklists, tasks and procedures that can be tailored to any IT organisation.  With ITIL being the most widely accepted approach to IT service management in the world, the practical knowledge we provide in this skill set will ensure you acquire an excellent grounding to work on complex IT projects.
