Interview Technique

The most important thing to do before your interview is to prepare. How can you be sure about the role, unless you have an understanding of the company and what they do? Read their website and the job description thoroughly and catch up on industry news that may apply to the field you will be working in. Not only does this certify your interest in the role, but also highlights you as someone who keeps up with the business world. Researching the industry may also raise questions you may want to ask the employer about the role, during your interview. Go through your CV and make sure you can talk about everything on there and give additional examples of the work experience or projects you have worked on.

A common concern of graduates as well as those experiencing a career change is that they may not have a large amount of work experience, however, the employer has read your CV and already knows this. If they are still interested in meeting you, they will be looking for potential and existing transferable skills which would be applicable, for instance; proven time management, ability to work under pressure, leadership, etc. Be prepared to give examples of a situation where you have demonstrated key competencies.

As an applicant with limited industry experience, the most important thing you can bring is enthusiasm and a willingness to learn.

We advise the following:

  • Dress in smart attire - a popular saying to keep in mind; ‘dress for the job you want, not the job you have’
  • Be punctual – it is best to arrive for an interview 10 minutes early than 10 minutes late
  • Be open and friendly – smile, even if you are nervous
  • Be honest – an employer will know if you are lying and if you feel you have to lie then the job is not right for you
  • Ask questions – this shows enthusiasm, interest and initiative
