  3. Hello Samir,

If you have no experience in the field, maybe management roles are a bit optimistic. Most companies with want candidates to have experience in the field first. Maybe business analysis within a financial organisation would be a good option for you? This would give you great exposure to a lot of the inner workings of the company and will enable you to build a strong track history of taking on a leadership role on certain projects. With a strong educational background like yours you shouldn’t find it too difficult to get into a graduate scheme. You will have proved yourself academically and will need to make sure your personality shines through. There are a couple of spelling/grammar mistakes in your post. It may be worth checking there are none in your CV, as it may seem like a minor thing, but when competition is high, it can be a reason for an employer to dismiss your application.

  4. Hello,
My husband and I are moving to England in May 2012 and need jobs within the IT industry. We are Danish citizens. I have a master degree in information architecture, se cond masters degree in information technology and are currently doing a doctorate in IT. My husband has a professional diploma in software development. We have applied for lots of jobs. Please help us know how we can succeed.

    Best regards

  5. Hello Grace,

I am assuming since you are Danish you are eligible to work across Europe so I would recommend a graduate scheme or junior IT roles. You both have a good solid education in IT so just need to gain some experience. In regards to getting the interviews, triple check your CV’s and then get someone else to check it. If English is not your first language then maybe ask someone who’s first language is English as even the smallest grammatical errors can make a difference. Also although it is difficult when you are applying for multiple roles, make sure the application reflects the role you are applying for each time.

Hope this helps and best of luck!

  6. Hello,

I have applied for FDM Academy programme. I am really keen on starting a career in the IT industry. I will be graduating this summer but I am an overseas student from India therefore please advise if I am still eligible to apply for the FDM academy programme as my visa will expire end of August 2012?

  7. Hello Chetna,

Unfortunately as the contract is 2.5 years you need to have this length left on your visa to complete the programme

Please get in touch if you can extend your visa/right to work

    Thank You

  8. Hi there,

I need advice on how to further my career in IT.

I don’t currently have any more formal qualifications beyond GCSE level, however I have two years experience working as an IT Technician in different companies. I recently lost my job as a supervisor in a branch of Computer Exchange.

I am now looking to take my career in a different direction but I don’t know quite what…

I have considered training in programming but with so many different options and courses available I have a bit of information overload and I’m not sure what to do.

The other thing that needs to be factored in is that I have too many financial commitments to stop earning completely while I learn, which makes things more complicated.

Any advice you could give me would extremely helpful and I would be very grateful!

    Thanks In Advance,
    Tommy

  9. Hi Tommy,

It’s difficult isn’t it. Most companies who will train you will do so either unpaid or charge for the training. My advice would be try to save some money for this. If you have recently trained in programming why not try to find some freelance work? You can start with family and friends devloping websites or applications for them or just making improvements to existing ones – this will really help on your CV as well as providing you with a little extra income. In the meantime I think support roles within smaller companies would be good to look for, most large companies want you to be a graduate but for mid-sized and smaller organisations the experience is more important. Whilst you are job hunting though I would strongly suggest setting up your own website as a freelancer to offer the skills you have to the public, you could do anything from call outs if a person’s computer crashes, to website development. There is also a lot you can learn online and get to grips to just by sitting at the computer and trying it, learning through trial and error.

Training schemes, especially those that combine employment are great and it sounds like something like that could really launch your career, but there are financial implications so this might be something you could look into next year and set as a goal for yourself

    Hope this helps

    Emily
